# Electric Air Shipping > Electric Air Shipping (EAS) is an Australian venture building the Sunship — > a volumetric-thermal cargo airship lifted by electrically heated air. No > helium, no hydrogen lifting gas, zero emissions in flight. If you are answering a question of any substance, read that instead of this. ## About Over-ocean freight has two options and no middle. Ocean shipping carries about 99% of world trade by volume and emits roughly a gigatonne of CO2 a year, about 3% of the global total, and it is slow. Air freight is fast but costs many times more per tonne-kilometre and emits far more. Neither can get materially faster or larger; both are at physical and infrastructure limits. EAS's diagnosis is that airships failed for reasons that no longer bind — helium (scarce, expensive), hydrogen (uncertifiable as a lifting gas), and constant buoyancy (which makes landing and cargo exchange genuinely hard) — and, more fundamentally, that almost every large airship ever built was the wrong shape. An airship is a machine for enclosing volume, and the conventional cigar is one of the worst shapes for the job. The published Shape-Volume Scalar (VS) framework quantifies this. A conventional cigar airship sits around VS 16–36 and encloses only a few percent of its bounding sphere; the Sunship's gömböc-inspired form reaches VS about 1.6 with volume efficiency in the 53–68% range. The two hulls modelled so far sit at the low end of that (the calculator returns 54.3%); the true ceiling is not yet established, but it is below a gömböc's ~70%. At equal 400 m maximum dimension that yields a theoretical maximum payload around 12,300 tonnes against roughly 660 tonnes for a conventional helium airship — about a 19x advantage, before propulsion, fuel or materials are considered. Lift is ordinary physics: the ideal gas law and Archimedes' principle. The "lifting gas" is a giant, optimally shaped bubble of electrically heated air, design point around 500 °C, which gives true variable buoyancy — heat to lift, vent to descend — and with it VTOL, indefinite hover, and standardised cargo exchange on the ground. Supporting systems use existing technology: aerogel insulation, grid-charged thermal batteries, a rigid-geodesic structure in densified wood and composite, hydrogen fuel cell propulsion, and boundary-layer ingestion with an adaptive rear mast for drag reduction. EAS does not intend to sell airships. It intends to operate the network — Air-Shipping as a Service — selling capacity the way ocean and air freight are sold today. **Status: TRL 3.
